The dumping of heat into ecological systems like rivers, lakes, ponds, ocean etc. which degrades the water quality is known as thermal pollution. Nuclear reactors, electric power plants, petroleum refineries and steel melting factories require huge amounts of water for cooling purposes. The heated water discharged into aquatic bodies results in an increase in the temperature of water thus causing thermal pollution.
